LAT/FTTA Enrolment

Guidance notes for holders of Locum appointments - training (LATs)
Type II fixed-term training appointments (FTTAs)

NB - LATs can now enrol online, please see the Online Enrolment section.  FTTA's still need to enrol with the paperbased form.

Appointees to LATs/FTTAs who envisage the possibility of later entry to a Type I Higher Training Programme in a medical specialty, and wish this period to be counted, must enrol with JRCPTB. Unless approval by JRCPTB is obtained prospectively, training undertaken during tenure of a LAT/FTTA cannot count towards a CCT.

PLEASE NOTE:  The Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK has been obliged to increase the fees charged for enrolment with the JRCPTB.    This decision has not been taken lightly but has been necessary to support the Colleges’ role in setting the standards for, and supporting trainees through, specialist training to the award of CCT.   The advent of new patterns of training, revised curricula, quality assurance and assessment demanded by the PMETB, have meant that the amount and complexity of work the JRCPTB will have to do in key areas has substantially increased.  At the same time the grant money received annually from the Department of Health to underpin this work has declined significantly, and the Colleges have to take account of this in their financial planning.  From 01/08/07 therefore, the cost of enrolling a LAT/FTTA post has therefore increased from £50 to £125.  Trainees sending in forms that are received by the JRCPTB before 01/08/07 will pay £50, those sending in forms that are received by us on or after 01/08/07 will pay the higher rate.

Trainees who enrol must:

  • meet the entry requirements for Higher Training in their specialty
  • occupy posts which have been approved for inclusion in a Higher Training programme in their specialty
  • have been appointed for a minimum of three months and maximum 1 year. Appointments of shorter duration will not be countable for CCT purposes.
  • declare to the Postgraduate Dean (or Deputy) at the time of appointment the intention to seek educational recognition of time in post for CCT purposes
  • obtain the Postgraduate Dean's signature on the enrolment form
  • undergo such assessments and appraisals as may be required by the Postgraduate Dean and Educational Supervisors during tenure of the post

The LAT enrolment form (Word document, 34k) should be completed and sent to the JRCPTB or LATs can enrol online, see the Online Enrolment section.  Your name will be entered in the JRCPTB database and you will receive a copy of the relevant Training Record. You must notify JRCPTB when your appointment has finished and return the LAT Educational Approval Form. You will then be sent a letter confirming the amount of educational credit that you have acquired.

If you are appointed to a second or subsequent LAT/FTTA in the same deanery/specialty, you must submit a further enrolment form for each appointment but an additional administration fee will not be required.

If you have been appointed to an SpR programme and awarded a National Training Number, it is essential to re-enrol with JCHMT by completing a different enrolment form. Please contact us at the address below or you can download the SpR enrolment form.

However, please note that only a total of 1 year (12 months) of your total LAT posts will count towards the CCT. CCTs cannot be awarded solely on the basis of a series of 3 month unrelated LAT/FTTA appointments. LATs/FTTAs undertaken in more than one hospital/trust will only be acceptable if this forms part of the standard approved training programme for that specialty in that deanery. The Specialist Order requires that a trainee must be enrolled in a Type I programme in order to become eligible for a CCT.
