Completing Specialist Training

Are you within 4 months of your CCT date?  Have you received your yellow notification form for completion of training from the JRCPTB?  If not, please contact the JRCPTB Training and Certification team

How to apply for a CCT

If you are a Specialist Registrar (SpR/StR) who has enrolled with JRCPTB (see enrolment) and you are due to complete higher specialist training within the next 4 months, the JRCPTB will automatically send you a Notification Form (also called Completion or Yellow Form), providing you have attended your PYAs and there are no outstanding queries on your anticipated CCT date.  If there is a query regarding your PYAs, the JRCPTB office will contact you in order to clarify the issues so that you can be sent a form.  If you receive this communication and have queries, please email ptb@jrcptb.org.uk

Each SpR/StR is required to complete this form before JRCPTB may recommend them to the General Medical Council (GMC) for the award of a Certificate of Completion of Training. As the GMC audits the work of all medical Royal Colleges, we need to confirm that the SpR/StR has met all the requirements for higher specialist training. We are required to provide specific information about the SpR/StR, without which the GMC will not issue a CCT (Certificate of Completion of Training).

When the JRCPTB sends your notification form, we will inform the GMC and they will invite you to complete their advanced completion forms so that when the recommendation from the JRCPTB is received at the GMC, your entry on to the specialist register is effectively seamless.

The notification form we automatically send to you will be compiled to include information held on our database. This should enable the you to complete the remainder of the form with minimal delay. The additional information you are required to provide will be reviewed by the relevant Specialist Advisory Committee(s) of the JRCPTB. The SACs can only arrive at a prompt decision regarding a training completion date if they are provided with all the necessary information. Incomplete forms will be returned and late forms may result in the award of the CCT being delayed.

Please note the following points:

  • In the training posts held boxes on the form you will need to include details of all training posts held after GMC registration listing dates, detailing research and all periods of absence. If necessary, continue on a separate sheet.
  • You are asked to provide a copy (or 2 copies if applying for dual specialty recognition) of your CV but DO NOT simply refer us to your CV. The CV must provide information on the full dates (dd/mm/yy) of all your medical appointments, details of your ward rounds, clinics and on-call commitments, of research and all periods of absence.
  • Please ensure you send in a RITA G for each specialty or one covering both specialties.  Contact your Postgraduate Deans office if you are unsure.
  • Completed forms must be reviewed and signed by your Regional Postgraduate Dean and Regional Specialty Adviser or Programme Director (for each specialty where relevant), where indicated. The form will be returned to you if all the separate signatures are not obtained.
  • If applying for dual specialty recognition, we require a second copy of the form to be submitted. Please photocopy the original.
  • If you are unsure how many assessments you should have completed, please refer to our guidance.

Once we have received your application, you will be sent a letter confirming receipt.  If you do not receive this, please email ptb@jrcptb.org.uk.

It usually takes us about 4-5 weeks to process your completed application. A final JRCPTB letter confirming your completion date will be issued once we have submitted the final recommendation to the GMC. The GMC will then instruct you on the next stage.

Please refer to diagram below outlining the completion process.  The payment referred to below takes place in the penultimate box on the diagram. Do not send any payment to the JRCPTB.  Please return your signed yellow form to JRCPTB.  If you have any further queries please email ptb@jrcptb.org.uk.
