Post & Programme approval process

A central part of JRCPTB's Quality Management process is obtaining educational approval from the Special Advisory Committee (SACs) for all new training posts in Core Medical Training (ST1&2) and Higher Medical Training (ST3+).  This includes flexible training posts, Academic Clinical Lecturer and Academic Clinical Fellow posts.

Role of the GMC

The General Medical Council (GMC) has sole legal responsibility for the approval of training posts and programmes. The GMC require a letter of college support before they will process an application for approval of a new training programme or training location.

Applying to the GMC for Approval

You will need to complete one of two GMC application forms;

GMC Form A - Application for the Approval of Specialty including GP Training Programmes

This form is used to apply for approval of an entirely new training programme or changes to an existing training programme (such as changes to the MTC).

GMC Form B - Application for approval of a new training post

GMC Form C - Application for approval of a new academic training post

This form is used to apply for approval of a new training location.

The GMC will not progress any requests until they have received a letter of support from the college.

We recommend you attach the letter of support to the application form submitted to the GMC.

Applying to the JRCPTB for a Letter of Support

Send a copy of the completed GMC Form A or Form B to quality@jrcptb.org.uk before submitting the application to the GMC.
