Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians' Training Board (JRCPTB)

Overview

The JRCPTB is a Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK body responsible for delivering the three Colleges' role in setting and maintaining standards for physician specialist training in the UK.

Setting and reviewing curricula and assessment standards as required by the GMC

In 2009 this was the subject of a major project (Project 2010) that delivered re-writes of all 30 CMT, Specialty and sub-specialty curricula incorporating lay, service and professional perspectives, leadership competencies and health inequalities.  The SACs will continue with the development of curricula and assessments working to the GMC's timetable for ‘minor' and ‘major' changes.

Supporting trainees progress through training to certification

This involves, monitoring individual trainees' progress through specialist training, providing expertise and advice as required for trainees and their supervisors, and to make recommendations for the award of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and Certificate confirming Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) via the combined programme pathway.

Working with deaneries, in accordance with the GMC QA framework, to deliver the quality management of specialist training and to provide annual specialty reports

We aim to:

  • Develop efficient processes, working with the postgraduate deans and College representatives locally, for the Quality Management ensuring delivery of physician training as stipulated in curricula and assessment strategy.
  • Operate the agreed processes, gathering relevant routine data, assisting the SACs with the production of annual reports.

We have produced a leaflet "A short guide to the JRCPTB" which helps to explain how the JRCPTB conducts its work and how the income we receive is spent. If you would like hard copies of the leaflet please contact us at ptb@jrcptb.org.uk.

Major Objectives for 2012

1. Implementing the Federation Colleges' requirements following the 2011 review of functions. To include infrastructure and performance improvement - to develop a managed programme of work to streamline the infrastructure (working with MRCP(UK) Central Office in some areas) and processes in response to the need for high quality customer support and financial management.

2. To provide high quality support advice and guidance for trainees, their supervisors and other training stakeholders on all aspects of PGME and maintaining high quality support to the GMC, trainees and individual applicants for specialist registration via CCT, the combined programme route and CESR.

3. To assist with the definition and implementation of the quality assurance processes required by the GMC and agreed with deaneries, contributing to the delivery of training programmes to the standards stipulated in the curricula.

4. To arrange for the ongoing review and revision of core and specialty curricula and assessment systems, in accordance with the needs of the service and the GMC's statutory requirements.

5. Continue to implement improvements in communication processes (website, newsletter, extranet) to ensure that stakeholders are kept informed on the JRCPTB activities and to provide evidence of continuing value for money.
