2011 communications survey results

The JRCPTB conducted its first survey of trainees focussing on the quality and frequency of its communications.  The survey ran from 1st August 2011 to 30th September 2011.  The survey was emailed to approximately 7000 core medical trainees and specialty trainees.  We received 1132 responses to the survey, equating to a 16% response rate.  Trainees from every deanery and every specialty were represented in the survey results.

We would like to thank everyone who took time to complete our survey.  These responses provided us with very useful and reliable data from which to gain a clear and detailed picture of your views and opinions on how well we communicate with you and how we can improve.

Headline results

The survey produced some very positive outcomes to a number of key questions.  The full survey report can be downloaded below but here are just few headline results:

1. Frequency of communications

67.8% of respondents reported that they were happy with the number of communications they received from JRCPTB. 26.7% would like to receive more communications and only 5.5% felt there were too many.

2. Response times for enquiries

75.7% of people surveyed said that they received a response to their last enquiry within one week.  Of this group, 14.1% received an immediate reply while 24.9.% heard back within one working day.

3. Attitude of staff

73% of people surveyed reported that they found JRCPTB staff friendly and helpful.

4. Design of website

79.6% of respondents rated the design of the JRCPTB website as good or excellent. However, when asked, the majority of people identified the website as one area of communications they would most like to see improvement.

Communications survey report

The survey asked a number of different questions ranging from when and why people visited the JRCPTB website to what method of communication they preferred to use when contacting us.  The full results of the survey are detailed in the report below (see link) along with a number of conclusions.  If you have a question about the results of the survey or the report please email Gareth.Bland@jrcptb.org.uk.

Next steps

The survey identified a number of areas and processes where we can improve. We have already begun to address these and are implementing changes in response to your feedback. Over the next 12 to 18 months we plan to make a series of improvements to include:

1. Improving the website navigation

2. Increased automation of the online enrolment system

3. Co-ordinate important communications more closely using ePortfolio, email, twitter and our newsletter

4. Reduce response times to email enquiries

5. Consult with trainee groups on important changes or communications: press releases, policy statements etc.

We will keep trainees updated on the improvements we make and will continue to welcome any suggestions to help improve the service we provide.  Please contact Gareth.Bland@jrcptb.org.uk.
